Exam Structure: Three Stages
The UPSC CSE is conducted in three stages, each serving as an elimination round:

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination
The Prelims consists of two papers, both objective (multiple choice). Only Paper I marks count for qualification; Paper II (CSAT) has a qualifying cut-off of 33%.
Paper I — General Studies (200 marks, 2 hours)
100 questions, each carrying 2 marks. Negative marking: 1/3rd for wrong answers.

Essay Paper (250 marks)
Two essays of roughly 1000-1200 words each, one from each of two sections. Topics range across philosophy, society, economy, science, polity, and abstract themes. Clarity of thought, logical structuring, and original thinking are rewarded.
Stage 3: Personality Test / Interview (275 marks)
A 30-45 minute conversation with a UPSC board. Tests personality, awareness of social issues, analytical ability, mental alertness, and suitability for a career in public service. Not a knowledge test — they assess your personality, decision-making, and balance of judgement.
